New Delhi, December 29, 2025: New India Foundation (NIF) has announced that applications for the third round of its Translation Fellowship for the 2025 session will close on December 31, 2025. The application window opened on August 1, 2025, and invites translators from across the country to apply.
The NIF Translation Fellowship supports the translation of significant non-fiction works from Indian languages into English, with the objective of expanding access to Indian-language literature and strengthening understanding of Independent India. The fellowship is open to translators working in ten Indian languages—Assamese, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Tamil and Urdu.
Each selected fellow will receive a six-month grant of ₹6 lakh to translate a non-fiction work originally written in one of the eligible languages from 1850 onwards. The programme is designed to enable focused translation work while recognising the scholarly and cultural value of Indian-language non-fiction.
Among the recipients of the first edition of the Translation Fellowship in 2022 was Hemang Ashwinkumar, whose translation of The Dawn of Life, MK Gandhi in South Africa by Prabhudas Gandhi was released in November 2025.
The jury for the 2025 Translation Fellowship includes NIF Trustees Niraja Jayal Gopal, Srinath Raghavan, Rahul Matthan and Manish Sabharwal, along with language expert committees across all ten languages. These committees comprise bilingual scholars, professors, academics and literary translators.
With the application deadline approaching, NIF has encouraged eligible translators to submit their applications before December 31, 2025.
