Darjeeling Society of Education Research and Development

With the support of the Help in suffering Australia who are specialists in animal health care the Society succeeded in establishing an animal shelter and hospital at Kalimpong where all the domestic animals of Kalimpong are given medical treatment More than 15 local people are employees of the shelter One branch also has been established at Lebong and a third one is in the pipeline to be established at Pedong In the history of Darjeeling the Society became the first organisation to publish Himalayan Journal of Education Research and Development highlighting the problems and issues faced by the Himalayan people and also on the need to conserve the valuable natural resources of the region through public education research and development initiatives Between 2010 and 2017 the Society has held more than ten workshops on medicinal plants and flori culture both at State and national levels The medicinal plants and ornamental plants hold immense potential for the economic development of the people and the region The State and National Plants Board of India have agreed to provide a major grant for the establishment of a model nursery The aim of the society is to bring about a green revolution in the field of medicinal plants for which the Darjeeling hill region is famous The state medicinal plants board of West Bengal has also agreed to provide a center for training the hill farmers in the domain of medicinal plants cultivation conservation and processing In the recognition of the highly productive activities of the society Prof Yonzone has been nominated a member of the technical screening committee of the state medicinal plants board recently The society has been instrumental in inspiring the orchid growers of hill region to revive the past flori culture fame of the region which led to the formation of the Darjeeling Himalayan Orchid Society under which several activities have been planned
