BOHURUPEE, regarded as the pioneer organization has an uninterrupted history of creative endeavour and stage productions,being established by the doyen of modern Indian theatre Sri Sombhu Mitra in 1948. Bohurupee has successfully staged plays of Rabindranath Tagore like Raktakarabi, Char Adhayay, Visarjan, Raja, Malini, Muktadhara and others. It has produced plays of great foreign playwrights, Sophocles, Ibsen, Tchekov, O Neil, Brecht, Anouilh, Sartre and Sanskrit classic Mrichchakatik of Sudrak along with the plays of established Indian playwrights like Tulsi Lahiri, Manmatha Roy, Sombhu Mitra, Badal Sarkar, Vijoy Tendulkar, Girish Karnard, Buddhadev Basu, Manoj Mitra, Sisir Kumar Das and also of the new generation playwrights. Bohurupee has been taking initiative in providing a base for meaningful interaction among various cultures in the country. , Bohurupee organizes a theatre festival each year to celebrate its anniversary where new productions of Bohurupee as well as productions from theatre groups from other states are staged. , Bohurupee organizes seminars and invites speeches from eminent theatre personalities and educationalists. It also organizes theatre workshops and classes for the new generation theatre workers. , Bohurupee travels with its productions in the different states in the country and Bangladesh with a view to exchange the cultural activities. , Bohurupee publishes a biyearly theatre journal since 1955 which has proved to be one of the longest running journals in its own domain. , It is our great pride that late Sombhu Mitra had been awarded Padmabhushan, Sangeet Natak Award, Magsaysay Award, Kalidas Samman and others. Late Tripti Mitra had been awarded Padmasree, Sangeet Natak Award, Dinabandhu Purashkar, Kalidas Samman and others. Late Kumar Roy was also awarded Sangeet Natak Award and Dinabandhu Purashkar. The awards were achieved for their valuable contribution for theatre through Bohurupee.
