Special features of the organization

Bengal Social Service League herein after refer as BSSL founded on 13th Feb 1915 by DR Dijendra Nath Maitra the then resident Surgeon of Mayo Hospital Kolkata. Pandit Sivanath Sastri named it the Bangiya Hitasadhan Mandali. It is the oldest secular voluntary NGO in the country. Kabi Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Sir, P. C. Roy, Acharya J. C. Bose, Lord S. P. Sinha, Sri Ramananda Chatterjee, Dr. Brojendra Nath Sil, Mr. Sukumar Roy, Mr. Annie Basant, Sri Satyendra Nath Maitra and many other came to be associated with BSSL.Poet Rabindranath was the President of BSSL.Motto of BSSL was the development of ATMASHAKTI. BSSL organized conferences i) First All India Social Workers Conference, presided over by MAHATMA GANDHI, ii) 2nd Conference presided over by SREEMATI SAROJINI NAIDU iii) 3rd conference presided over by DR. D. N. Maitra, 4th conference presided over by Mr. ANNIE BASANT. In 1972 Secretary of BSSL Sri S. N. Maitra was given the NEHRU LITERACY award. BSSL also got the awards in literacy i) UNESCO KRUPSKAYA MEDAL in 1975, ii) UNESCO Iraq Literacy Prize in 1986, iii) 2nd prize for Fully Illustrated Follow-up-Literacy Material by the Asian Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU) in 1992.
