Special features of the organization
Set up in 1984 the activities of Academy Theatre centre round one primary objective: to make a research into the history of the stage, particularly its music, in a term Natyasangeet, along with allied performing arts and try to revive the interest of the masses in this fond remembrance through productions, publications and preservations. , With the objective, Academy Theatre has regularly manifested the research based concepts pertaining to the stage and its songs. Nearly 40 productions have been performed with high reputation and appreciation till date. Seminars, workshops and exhibitions on music, theatre, jatra, puppetry and paintings are being held regularly. Academy Theatre has presented educative as well as entertaining programmes on the several regional channels and also on the national network of Doordarshan. , Academy Theatre has participated with its varied presentations in the national and international festivals in and outside the country. Moreover, Academy Theatre has published a biographical compilation in Bengali on Vincent Van Gogh and with its archival preservations, has enriched a number of definitive publications in the field of performing arts and literature. , To be specific, the archival preservations of Academy Theatre include a wide range of , materials: manuscripts date back to 1779, slide and photographs date back to 1869 , musical instruments date back to 18th century , and audio-video discs as also cassettes of live recordings of the performing personalities and events related to stage and music, not only of Bengal, but also of, all over India and abroad. While published materials date back to 1816, the library has over 8000 books and issues of over 800 periodicals in its stock. A large number of holdings are novel, rare and hardly available anywhere else. , These things apart, the respective performers of theatrical and musical companies of yore are provided with financial and other required assistance, , to the best of its ability, by Academy Theatre.
