New Delhi, August 23, 2023. Koh Samui, renowned for its marine diversity, hosts a thriving marine ecology that includes coral reefs. Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui takes active steps to safeguard this marine life through a dedicated Coral Conservation Project. Launched in 2017, the Coral Conservation Project focuses on educating guests and facilitating coral regeneration in the surrounding reefs.
“By recognizing the threat to the coral reefs around Koh Samui that come from natural and human activities, we are taking charge of sustaining the reefs for generations to come,” asserts in-house Marine Biologist Aorn Sillpasathitwong.
One of the opportunities, as identified by Aorn, “is to introduce sustainable practices that support the local fishers while also protecting coral and marine life. The project now works closely with local communities to bring the focus on marine conservation into locals’ daily routine, since the reefs are susceptible to human interaction.”
With over 20,000 coral fragments planted since its inception, the program has witnessed notable growth. By employing the Lazarus Method adapted by the DMCR, the replanted reefs now boast a survival rate exceeding 70 percent. Aorn, involved in the initiative, shares positive updates about doubled coral sizes and the presence of new marine life, such as juvenile fish and baby crabs. In partnership with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) and the local community, the Resort provides guests with educational opportunities. Through snorkeling tours and conservation introduction sessions, the goal is to promote awareness about preserving underwater ecosystems while appreciating their aesthetics. “Guests at the Resort learn about the varied species of corals such as staghorn, mushroom, galaxy, leaf, hump and sea fan, and a variety of creatures that thrive in the Gulf of Thailand and within swimming distance from the Resort,” Aorn said.
“We look forward to supporting this rich biodiversity. But there is a lot more work to be done,” admits Jasjit Assi, General Manager. “Ecological restoration is a long and arduous process and we are proud to be at the forefront of these efforts on the island of Koh Samui – supporting not just the reefs’ health but continuing a dialogue with the local community to ensure that we work together, towards one goal.”
In collaboration with Ban Tai Blue Crab Bank, a local coastal community, the Resort has extended its efforts. The Resort aids in the rehabilitation and release of blue crab zoaeas from the beach, contributing to their survival within the Resort's reef. This partnership further supports the conservation endeavors of Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui.
