New Delhi, May 7, 2024: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has launched a unique initiative called the “Wrinkles Acche Hai” campaign as part of its ongoing Swachhata Pakhwada from May 1 to 15. As part of this innovative campaign, CSIR has urged its employees to wear non-ironed attire every Monday in an effort towards mitigating climate change.

The idea behind this initiative is to raise awareness about climate change and its impact. Therefore, by wearing non-ironed garments, CSIR staff members will be able to actively contribute towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Ironing clothes typically releases around 200 grams of carbon dioxide per set, and by promoting this practice, CSIR hopes to spread awareness about diminishing the environmental footprint of ironing clothes.

At CSIR, the campaign is being spearheaded by Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, the Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Kalaiselvi says that by urging CSIR employees to embrace wrinkles as a means to conserve energy and promote sustainability, they hope topromote the significance of individual actions in the fight against climate change.

Beyond the clothing campaign, CSIR is implementing a few standard operating procedures (SOPs) to reduce electricity consumption across all its labs. This includes giving itself an initial target of reducing electricity charges by 10% at all its workplaces during the June-August 2024 period.

Recently, the research firm also installed the country’s largest climate clock at its headquarters in New Delhi’s Rafi Marg.

Established in 1942, CSIR is India’s premier research organisation. The research body operates a network of 37 national laboratories and 39 outreach centres across India covering different disciplines like pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, nanotechnology, geophysics, etc.
