Tata Chemicals spends Rs 21 crores on CSR projects in FY21; Major focus on skill development

New Delhi, 17 January 2022: One of the largest chemical companies in India, Tata Chemicals Limited has spent a total of Rs 20.92 crores on its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in the financial year 2020-21. As per the company’s annual report, the average net profit for the past three financial years was Rs 925.27 crores. So its prescribed expenditure, which is calculated as 2% of the amount, stood at Rs 18.51 crores. Thus, an excess amount of Rs 2.41 crores was spent on its various CSR initiatives. 

The annual report states that the company has adopted a participatory approach in designing need-based CSR programmes, which are implemented through Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD), the Tata Trusts, and with various government and non-government institutions.

Tata Chemicals’ CSR priorities included the following:

  • Enriching the quality of life by creating sustainable livelihoods
  • Maintaining and conserving environment and biodiversity
  • Enabling better health, sanitation, nutrition, and education
  • Building social capital for long-term progress on all fronts

Tata Chemicals CSR expenditure summary

Two percent of the company’s average net profit for the past three years was calculated at Rs 18.51 crore. But the company’s total spending on CSR amounted to around Rs. 21 crores, which is 2.26% of the average profit after taxes.

  • CSR amount spent against other than ongoing projects for the financial year: 5.57 crores
  • Amount spent in administrative overheads: Rs. 0.79 crores
  • Excess amount for set-off: Rs. 2.41 crores

The expenditure towards Corporate Social Responsibility incurred for the year ended March 31, 2020 was Rs 37.81 crores against its CSR obligation of Rs 21.39 crore last year. Thus, it had spent an excessive amount of Rs 16.42 crores in the last financial year.  

Tata Chemical’s CSR Focus Areas

As part of its CSR activities, Tata Chemicals was able to extend support to the surrounding and extended communities through multiple initiatives. The key initiatives were:

  1. The company manufactured and distributed approximately 1.17 million litres of sodium hypochlorite in Gujarat and approximately 0.6 million litres to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai.
  2. Financial assistance was provided to various organisations including the chief minister's fund, district collector forums, hospitals, and the rural sector of India.
  3. Tata Chemicals supported government hospitals with PPE kits for frontline medical workers near factory locations. 1.07 lakh litres of hand sanitiser was manufactured by Akola and Ankleshwar units of Rallis and distributed freely across Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka. A 100-bed isolation ward at Mithapur, Gujarat was built to supplement government structure.
  4. The company focused on poverty alleviation and creating livelihoods, both linked to farm and non-farm-based activities.
  5. Its main focus was on the management of natural resources and conservation of the environment. The key programmes included land and water management activities, waste management, preservation of biodiversity, and mitigation of climate change impacts. Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the company through TCSRD set up a dry waste processing plant at Mithapur.

CSR projects of Tata Chemicals are implemented through the Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD) which was set up in 1980 to protect and nurture rural populations. Since then, the company has set up other focused organisations such as the Tata Chemicals Golden Jubilee Foundation and Okhai—Centre for empowerment.

The company has partnered with various government and non-government organisation such as Sir Ratan Tata Trust, WASMO (Water and Sanitation Management Organisation), NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development), American India Foundation, WTI (Wildlife Trust of India), HP, Schneider, and GRIMCO (Gujarat Rural Industries Marketing Corporation Limited).

 S. Padmanabhan is the Chairman of the Tata Chemicals’ CSR Committee. Other key members include Dr. C. V. Natraj and R. Mukundan.
