New Delhi, 3 August 2020: Tile-maker Somany Ceramics has spent a total of Rs 2.01 Crore on its various Corporate Social Responsibility projects in the year 2019-20. In the last financial year, the company had spent around Rs 2.16 Crore.
The company’s CSR spent include a total contribution of Rs 25 lakh towards PM CARES and around 9 Lakh on different COVID relief initiatives.
According to the Company officials, the money spent on the CSR amounted to more than 2% of the average netprofit after taxes in the previous three financial year. The average net profit of the Company over last three financial yearsstood at Rs 99.08 Core. Thus, by spending Rs 2 Crore on CSR, the company exceeded its prescribed CSR budget of Rs 1.98 Crore in 2019-20.
As per the Companies Act, 2013, amount required to be spent by the Company on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities during the year was Rs1.98 Crore, the company said in its financial statement for the year 2019-20.
The total profit of the company stood at Rs 13.26 Crore in the financial year 2019-20.
Somany Ceramics: Multiple CSR projects
Somany has been engaging in social and community welfare through its social responsibility in the areas of national heritage conservation,restoration of historical sites, promotion of art and culture, destitute care and rehabilitation,environmental sustainability and ecological balance, education promotion, vocational skills and healthcare promotion including preventive health care. Through its various CSR initiatives, the company has been reaching out to the marginalised sections of the society and has been contributing towards their betterment.
The Company works primarily through H.L Somany Foundation, to support its CSR projects.
"Our CSR approach focuses on the development of communities aroundthe vicinity of our plants and covers area of animal welfare, destitute careand rehabilitation, promoting education, enhancing vocational skillsalso developed innovative programmes that leverage our capabilities asa tile manufacturer," the company officials said.
Under its "Tile Master" initiative, the company has cumulatively trained more than4912 masons/workers on tile laying techniques and improved theirproductivity and livelihood.
The Company made various CSR interventions developed after consultations with the local communities. A few CSR activities undertaken by Somany is listed below:
Health and hygiene
Somany contributed towards a rehabilitation centre in Himachal Pradesh with the objective of providing specific physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, medical and genetic counselling help to people affected by muscular dystrophy.It ensured complete care management for testing, diagnosis, rehabilitation, orientation,rejuvenation and all other alternative therapies for patients.
The company contributed towards the constructionof a homeopathic dispensary in Uttar Pradeshand helped procure medicines, provided to theunder-privileged for free.
Education programmes
Somany worked hand-in-hand with arenowned art foundation to protect andpreserve national heritage, in turn ensuring theprotection of contemporary art in the country.
It helped people with visualimpairment by aiding them with the rightinfrastructure for education and vocationallearning, promoting the right to education forall.
The company improved the infrastructure of various renowned schools and universities across the country, providing scholarship to students and establishing centres of excellence. It aided the construction of a public library and a large hall for educational seminars in Uttar Pradesh.
Owing to the paradigm shift towardse-learning, schools increasingly startedadopting e-education. Somany aided such aschool in New Delhi with the funds required for the adoption of e-learning and modernisationof equipment. The Company provide improvededucation to economic weaker students,ensuring their right to equal education.
Skill development
Somany helped masons across Delhi,Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Gujaratand Rajasthan in their training and skilldevelopment.
COVID-19 pandemic
The Company contributed Rs 25 Lakh in the PM Cares Fund to help the Government fight the COVID-19 pandemic better. Further, the Company provided relief through food distribution to eradicate hunger and healthcare assistance to the needy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CSR Committee of Somany is chaired by Mr. Abhishek Somany who is the Managing Director of the company.
