MCG Terminates Ecogreen's Contract; Introduces Three New Agencies for Waste Management in Gurugram

New Delhi, June 17, 2024: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has issued a termination notice (final) to solid waste management concessionaire Ecogreen. Furthermore, after cancelling Ecogreen’s contract, it has been given to three new agencies that were transporting waste from secondary points to the Bandhwari landfill. The move by the MCG comes after taking into account a lot of irregularities and many unresolved issues on part of Ecogreen in the last 7 years.

A five member committee will be formed to carry out the formal takeover within a week which will have the deputy commissioner of Gurugram, an official from Faridabad and other stakeholders to streamline the process.

Though the contract was signed for 20 years, it’s been terminated in 7 years. Meanwhile, we have learnt that Ecogreen Energy had to deal with its own set of challenges, the biggest one, dealing with a “mafia” which collected the waste, hampering the company’s operations. The existing waste collectors and mafia didn’t allow Ecogreen to collect waste from the households, the firm alleges. Furthermore it had lodged an FIR and sought help from the MCG, but to no avail.

On the other hand, in 2017, when the contract was signed, the MCG had set clear targets for Ecogreen including 100% coverage of households for door-to-door waste collection within a year, recycling 80% of the collected waste within a year, 100% segregation of waste at source within six months, and work continuously for seven days. However, according to the MCG, it failed to achieve any of the set targets.

Disposal of waste in an unorganised and chaotic manner on the designated land, failing to dispose 100% scientific waste disposal within six months of the establishment of a designated sanitary landfill, were some other factors that result in the contract cancellation.

Some residents from Sushant Lok 3 have registered their complaints with MCG against the irregularities of Ecogreen Energy’s waste collection management. According to them, Ecogreen had stopped transporting waste from secondary collection points since June 28 last year and was dumping the waste at unauthorized sites.
