Maruti Suzuki spends over Rs 140 Cr on CSR in FY 20-21; Focus on Education & Health

New Delhi, 2 December 2021: Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the well-known Indian automobile manufacturer, has spent a whopping amount of Rs 140.940 crore on various CSR activities in the financial year 2020-21. Key highlights of the CSR efforts included setting-up of multi-specialty hospital and school in Gujarat.

The CSR budget has been fully utilised on programmes approved by the company’s board. The multi-specialty hospital and the school near the Suzuki plant in Gujarat have started operations, stated its annual report.

The average net profit of the company for the past three financial years (2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20), calculated in accordance with the provisions of Section 198 of Companies Act 2013, amounted to Rs7,045 crore. Therefore, the prescribed CSR expenditure for the financial year 2020-21 was calculated as Rs 140.90 crore.

CSR administrative overheads of the company amounted to Rs 0.719 crore and the amount spent on impact assessment was Rs 0.14 crore for impact assessment study (FY 2020-21). Thus, the total CSR spent for the financial year stood at Rs 140.94 crore. The excessive amount spent by Maruti Suzuki was Rs 0.040 crore. The details of company’s CSR spend is below:

Focus areas

The annual report of the company states, “The Company continued its CSR programme amid challenges in the external environment. It undertakes CSR projects in areas of community development, road safety and skill development in alignment with the national development priorities.”
Some of the major CSR areas of the company are as follows:
Supporting improvements in primary education, as part of CSR: The company supported 58 government-run schools across 23 villages in Haryana and Gujarat through infrastructure upgradations. In addition, the Companyemploys 62 supplementary teachers and provides other teaching aids. Maruti Suzuki has also setup a school in Sitapur, Gujarat, in partnership with Podar Education Network. Its primary wing has been made operational from April 2021.
Initiatives for health and well-being: The company in partnership with the philanthropic arm of Zydus Group of hospital, Ahmadabad has set up a 50-bedded multi-specialty hospital in Sitapur, Gujarat as a part of its CSR programme
Response to COVID-19 pandemic: Under CSR, Maruti Suzuki donated 280 ventilators, more than 2 million face masks, over 10,000 medical protective clothing, 1,000 testing kits and other medical supplies to Haryana and Gujarat state governments. Dry ration kits and cooked meals were provided to the local communities affected by sudden disruption due to the pandemic. Besides, the company has also donated 14 PSA oxygen generator plants to various hospitals in the country.
Making potable water available in local communities: It has set up 28 water ATMs across 25 villages at an affordable price, as part of CSR. Over 23,000 households within the local communities are benefitting through this initiative.
Providing vocational training to the youth through skill development initiatives: The company supports 113 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country to impart vocational training. It also adopted 30 ITIs across various states and over 15,000 students were trained in 2020-21.

The CSR committee of the company is headed by the chairman R C Bhargava. Other key members of the committee include K Ayukawa and R P Singh.
