Special features of the organization
WAG Chelsea is a Delhi based NGO and CHELSEA is an acronym for the activities that the organization is involved with in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The organization was founded in 1992 by a group of exArmy officers wives with the aim of preventing the spread of HIV and ensuring the dignity of those living with HIV. WAG Chelsea s vision is to provide quality health and educational services to the marginalized sections of society. The organization reaches out to MARP, providing information, links to services and advocates reduction of stigma and discriminatory practice. Over the years, WAG Chelsea has reached out to maximum people includes children through community outreach, awareness events and basic support services to OVC. , The community clusters where WAG Chelsea works includes the urban slums of Old Seemapuri, New Seemapuri, Jain Mandir Colony, Tahirpur, Sunder Nagri, Nand Nagri, Kardampuri, Karawal Nagar, Bhajanura and Lal Qila The clusters comprises of very poor migrant, Most At Risk Populations MARP and vulnerable groups predominantly from the northern states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. There is reluctance to accept some of these groups including Female sex workers , Men having Sex with Men and People Living with HIV he vulnerability of these populations stems from their limited access to HIV/AIDS because of their marginalization, stigmatization and common experience of discrimination by broader society. A key factor behind their marginalization and a tangible barrier to their access to health services is their lack of financial resources. Many individuals with in these groups are unemployed and have low income earning capacity. Further these vulnerable populations often have a higher HIV prevalence and display behavior that puts them at higher risk of HIV infection. , From April 2004 the organization has been Implementing National Aids Control Organization and Delhi State Aids Society supported Targeted Intervention programs on Female Sex workers and the locations in Harsh Vihar. In October 2011 the organization received another program on FSW for Lal Qila area. Total 2,000 FSWs have been reached out so far by the organization. They have been referred for STI and HIV AIDS screening and testing in Government Hospitals. Care and Treatment services are provided to the targeted population.
