Special features of the organization
Streechetana. a womens forum started in 2006 in Kozhikode with a handful of women, has now become a visible force and has made significant impact on the society with its noble vision and dedicated mission. Our vision is to uphold, cherish and safeguard the rights and dignity of women by focusing on empowerment and self development. Our activities are mainly centered round three sectors women, children and the community. We conduct regular awareness programmes for disseminating knowledge on important issues concerning women like gender mainstreaming, domestic violence,Leagal awareness, immoral trafficking etc with the help of experts. We have coordinated vocational training programmes in collaboration with other agencies. We have also conducted workshops on entrepreneurship development like mushroom cultivation, tailoring, paper bag making, jewellery making. Many of our trainees have started their own units. For the youth, in the field of education, we conduct programmes for adolescents for teaching life skills to enable them to become better adults and responsible citizens. We have already conducted Niravu a life skill programme for 3 years in a local Govt school for 120 girls with very satisfying results. In addition, we have a scholarship programme NILA for needy female students to provide financial support to deserving persons. At community level, we have undertaken distribution of sanitary kits, and notebooks on regular basis to people from underprivileged sections. We have championed the cause of underprivileged by getting them drinking water and freedom from water logging after filing PIL and a long legal battle. Streechetana initiative resulted in many positive changes in the issue of Womens toilets in the city. The Honorable Ombudsman ordered the following within 13 sittings with the Petitioner Streechetana and the officials of the Corporation.15 automatic toilets were constructed in the city. Toilets complexes constructed in Sarovaram Bio Park and Beach.
