About the organization

Special features of the organization

sSTEP , Society for Social Transformation and Environment Protection (sSTEP) is a Right based, humanitarian development organization working with the poor and marginalized communities of Guwahati Urban and also rural part of Assam. The organization was formed by a pool of young city based volunteers deeply concerned about the distressful conditions that the growing communities of urban poor are in. Initially a loose informal network of friends and volunteers, it coalesced together as a group and started working as a unit from 1998, but it was formally registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 in the year 2001. The group emerged, when as contemporaries studying together in the Gauhati University with a deep commitment to work for the poor in Assam, they came forward to work as volunteers for organizations and agencies working for the deprived. In course of their work, having trained themselves with the support of different organizations and agencies, they were able to visit and live with the most remotely located and impoverished communities across the state.
