Special features of the organization

Vocational Training , SHED has provided Vocational Training for over one lakh twenty thousand youngsters, most girls through our courses in tailoring, beautician, mehendi, imitation jewelry, etc. , , Value Education , Stress on values has included Gender Equity. Since then, the number of girls now going to school in the Dharavi slum alone has increased three-fold. Gender Equity has also spread through working with 64 youth groups in Dharavi, in schools and 50 women s groups. , , National Integration and Communal Harmony , Traumatized people after the 1992/93 riots in Dharavi were rehabilitated and given counselling sessions. SHED s deep involvement in Communal Harmony continues. , , , , Creche and Balwadis , SHED runs a Creche at Dharavi for working mothers and Balwadis at Kalina and Mahakali Centres. A nourishing mid-morning mini-meal is provided to all the pupils. , , SHED English Primary School, Dharavi , There are 564 pupils staying from Std. I to Std. VI. , , Mahila Mandals , 59 Mahila Mandals have been established including 15 in Dharavi. Among other things, the Mandals with assistance from SHED s staff provide help to victims of domestic violence, violence against women, etc. by liaisoning with local authorities and the police. , , Family Counselling , Over 34,000 poignant cases have been resolved including those of destitute old women thrown out of their homes by their adult children, but now cared for. , , Family Planning , SHED has trained grassroots workers of NGOs in this. Over 48,000 people in Dharavi alone have adopted Family Planning methods. , , AIDS Intervention , AIDS Intervention and awareness has been extended to 60,000 people, as well as 56,000 male migrants and 3000 bar girls and their clients. , , , Health and Hygiene in our slum and Rural Projects , In the year 2003, SHED initiated a programme for Personal Health, Hygiene and Sanitation in 10 villages of Saphale. This programme required the construction of a low cost toilet which was successfully built and operated. Thereafter, Awareness Workshops for Hygiene and Sanitation, as well as Vocational Training classes for Masons enabled us to spread the programme out to over 60 villages and hamlets. We are proud to confirm that our venture has been 100% successful. Today, approximately 40,000 families are using these low cost toilets. , , A Health Centre in Dharavi, a weekly Homeopathy Clinic at Kalina Centre and Health, Hygiene and Sanitation Programmes are being run in 4 Municipal Schools. , , Self Help Groups for senior citizens , SHED has many ways in which we have been supporting and helping senior citizens. They now enjoy coming to our Centres to help with our children s cr che, learn yoga, reading, writing and singing and enjoy showing off their new skills. We have 5 Self Help Groups with them
