In 1968, the Nutrition Society of India (NSI), set up a study group on nutritional anaemia. This committee, spearheaded by Dr.C.Gopalan, recommended iron folate supplementation for pregnant women and preschool children as a prophylaxis measure (NSI,1968) based on the findings of various studies carried out in India.
