Special features of the organization

Established in 1990, KIRAN Centre is a non-profit and non-governmental organization based in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh). The organization works to improve the lives of people with disabilities and their families. KIRAN Centre won India s best NGO-award in 2007/8 from National Trust (under the ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment) and Best NGO award from Uttar Pradesh Government in 2006. , At first KIRAN started rehabilitation and non-formal education activities in the city of Varanasi for 7 years. Since 1998 we shifted to Madhopur, 12 km south of the city where we have established a kind of inclusive mini-village where 230 children with different disabilities and economically poor non-disabled ones study and receive together counseling, primary-education, special education, grihini-services for uneducated young women, skill-training as well as all necessary rehabilitation-services. Emphasis is given to creating in these children an open mind for their capacities and their different rights. Simultaneously a team of experienced personnel is regularly present in 30 villages of Mirzapur district for intensive right based CBR with stress on creating SHGs, and another team of experts visits every month villages in different districts of U.P. and Bihar for rehabilitation services.
