Special features of the organization

The organization was started its work in 2006 to prevent the spread of HIV through education and volunteerism While doing this prevention work we also continued to do care support work for the people living with HIV especially the children and women In this regard we are implementing the following projects Annam Project supports 25 poor widows living with HIV They receive monthly provision nutrition counseling and treatment Poshak and Arokiya Project The projects support caregivers mothers and grandparents of children living with HIV and children living with HIV respectively Every month the children health parameters are taken entered into electronic health record to see if the children are as per WHO standards of nutrition identified by colour coding This is the first of its kind in India HIVandAIDS Education Programs We conducted 6312 HIVandAIDS education programs for factory workers nursing students injecting drug users college students slum youth and also to tribal community Through this their awareness levels increased thereby they would be able to protect themselves from HIV while faced with real life situations Community Outreach Programs We conducted excursions celebrated Children Day WomenDay and observed World AIDS Day and International Candle Light Day covering 7801 persons through these programs Summer Volunteer Programs Every year we conduct this program to teach scientifically correct HIVandAIDS curriculum to students of schools and colleges in Chennai through American volunteers from Arizona universities So far we have covered 68212 students under this program The volunteers also implemented side projects working with various local NGOs in slums educating people in health and hygiene topics Testing Project 60 males from a IDU and alcoholic rehab center underwent HIV test The target is to cover 1000 by 2017 HIVandAIDS Mainstreaming Project Started in 2011 we have so far covered 200 NGO personnel from 100 NGO who were not working in HIV field were trained to mainstream HIVandAIDS prevention activities in their day to day activities Health First project 9 Medical students from University of California Los Angeles UCLA have come under this project and did their internship with IAPA Simultaneously they also did internship with 2 leading hospitals in Chennai benefiting the people of Chennai and California UTHAVI Telephone Triage project Under this project we trained 16 students including 12 from the Madras School of Social work to provide advice on treatment at 24 X 7 using algorithm So that the children living with HIV can get treatment advice even at odd hours in the night and be saved from life threatening situations if any Training of Trainers Project We provided training in HIVandAIDS to 505 students of Madras school of social work and other colleges who will in turn provide training to others in due course Chennai floods IAPA staff obtained from corporate institutions bed sheets clothes for children and caregivers towels bed sheets mats rice milk powder candles We also provided typhoid Hepatitis A and Cholera vaccinations to 53 children
