CENTRE FOR GERONTOLOGICAL STUDIES , Major Activities and Achievemets , I. Origin , The Centre for Gerontological Studies (CGS), Thiruvananthapuram was established in 1983 by forward looking social scientists from universities in 5 South Indian States as an international centre for inter-disciplinary studies and research on aging. The major objectives of the Centre are to (a) organize, promote and execute programmes of study and research on aging and generate knowledge that is socially relevant, (b) examine government policies, programmes and legislations that have gerontological bearing and prepare reports that may be useful for policy makers and programme planners, (c) organize and conduct seminars, workshops, symposia and study groups on major issues of population aging, , II. Current Ongoing Programme , Age Friendly Grama Panchayat Programme is being run very successfully with Government support in 6 Grama Panchayats in Kerala as a unique innovative project of CGS with emphasis on bottom-up planning. , , III. Achievements - National Recognition , , For outstanding contribution to aging, Government of India SJ&E Ministry conferred on CGS its highest award - The Vayoshreshtha Samman 2009. , For significant contribution for senior citizens, CGS Chairman, Dr. P.K.B. Nayar, received the Vayoshreshtha Samman - Life-Time Achievement Award 2014 from Government of India SJ&E Ministry.
