Special features of the organization
All India Disaster Mitigation Institute, AIDMI, Ahmedabad, India is a registered national organization which is among the pioneers in the area of disaster mitigation. It is community based action research and action advocacy organization that has been working towards bridging the gap between policy, practice and research, in disaster management since 1995. AIDMI s mission is to reduce the vulnerability of poor communities by increasing, mitigation efforts, through learning and action to ensure water, habitat, food and work and so human security. The organization has a local presence with global interest and work. AIDMI has expanded its work over the years to cover various types of natural as well as manmade disasters in many parts of India and beyond. AIDMI works towards promoting disaster mitigation by supporting, capturing, processing and disseminating disaster related information, lessons and innovative ideas as well as conducting trainings, round tables and workshops. , , AIDMI has worked in different areas of disaster management including risk reduction, knowledge management, Disaster Response and policy advocacy. The focus of AIDMI has always been to reduce disaster risk to poor, vulnerable communities, both through integrating risk reduction measures with disaster recovery and by encouraging people living in hazard-prone areas to take disaster risk mitigation approaches. AIDMI is working with partners in 9 Asian countries on Climate Change and DRR issues, and directly working in 7 states of India. It has directly supported more than 14,000 disaster affected victims for tailor made livelihood relief, supported more than 8000 persons to temporary or permanent or repairing of their shelter. More than 3500 members were covered through disaster insurance under Risk transfer initiative. It has trained 5600 school teachers/students, covered 40,000 students, teachers and school staff under school insurance, conducted 126 trainings and 1500 schools under child s right to safer school campaign. It is reaching to 30,000 readers across the globe through its web-based English publication Southasiadisaters.net, reaching to 10,000 national readers through its Hindi publication and to 7750 readers of Gujarat through Gujarati Publication. Apart from this it has conducted 25 regional / national training courses and trained 525 participants of civil society organizations, government, Universities and organizations working for DRR, conducted 375 local capacity building cycles and trained more than 11826 community members in local languages. 86 interns from all over the world from came to AIDMI for applying their knowledge to work.
