The Maternal Death Review guidelines launched by the Government of India is a tool available to health managers and policymakers at various levels to critically look at health system performance, identify gaps and initiate corrective steps through convergent action. Investigating such cases of life-threatening obstetric morbidity or Maternal Near Miss would help bring further improvements to the programme.
 
William J Clinton Foundation in collaboration with UNFPA is supporting the state in identifying and documenting the maternal- near-miss cases at the HDUs. The Public Health Specialist will work closely with the NHM and UNFPA/WJCF in undertaking systematic MNM-R and use this information to bring maternal health system improvements.
 

Primary Responsibilities include

The Public Health Specialists will be based at Bhopal, and S/he will be responsible for providing technical support for the identification and documentation of maternal near-miss cases.
 
As part of the work, the Consultant, under the direction of the UNFPA and WJCF team, will undertake field visits to the level 3 and level 2 facilities in the designated geography to document and analyse the maternal near-miss cases.
 

  • Specific roles and responsibilities will include the following:
  • Strengthening HDUs by averting maternal health through process documentation of maternal near-miss cases.
  • Support in improved service delivery in the maternity wing of high-dependency units such as level 3 and level 2 facilities (DHs and CH/CHCs).
  • Document and data-driven exercises for decision-making and process improvement in maternal health.
  • Undertake any other related task assigned by the UNFPA and WJCF team.

Project Background
 
To prevent maternal mortality and reduce the unmet need for family planning, WJCF aims to enhance access and utilization of quality sexual and reproductive health services in close partnership with UNFPA in Madhya Pradesh.
 
Family Planning services – WJCF will work to reach out to adolescents and the women of reproductive age (15 to 49 years), ensuring they receive comprehensive sexuality education without bias, both in and out of school, and ensure they are able to access a range of effective modern contraceptive methods so that they have complete agency to plan their pregnancy. This will be done through demand and supply-side interventions by strengthening the capability of healthcare workers of different levels.
 
Maternal Health Services – Strengthening maternal health services by providing equitable access to high-quality maternal care during, antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum period, robust supply chain mechanisms and data-driven exercises ensuring institutional reinforcement for timely management of complications.
 
Adolescent Health – Work towards enhancing awareness among adolescent-oriented programs through system strengthening and operationalizing the existing demand generation platforms, thereby engaging with field-level workers FLWs and clients to improvise and utilize adolescent-friendly services.
