The Program Officer, Bioinformatics, operating under the Senior Advisor for Metagenomics & Lab Systems, will play a pivotal role in leveraging bioinformatics to advance the objectives of the Health Security and AMR program.

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge genomics research and its application in public health.

Primary Responsibilities include

Bioinformatics Strategy and Implementation:

  • Collaborate with the Senior Advisor to develop and execute bioinformatic pipelines required for project goals.
  • Perform comprehensive analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data for zoonotic diseases, AMR, and related genomic surveillance.
  • Validate and troubleshoot bioinformatics pipelines to minimize errors.
  • Extract meaningful insights from complex genomic datasets.

Data Visualization and Reporting:

  • Translate complex genomic data into intuitive visual representations for diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate with project teams to prepare insightful reports and presentations.

Quality Control and Validation:

  • Establish rigorous quality control processes to ensure accuracy and reliability of bioinformatics analyses.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Collaborate closely with laboratory teams, epidemiologists, and other relevant experts to integrate bioinformatics findings into broader public health strategies.

Innovation and Continuous Learning:

  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in bioinformatics and genomics research.
  • Explore innovative approaches to enhance genomic surveillance and AMR containment.

Capacity Building and Training:

  • Contribute to training sessions and capacity-building efforts for laboratory and public health personnel in bioinformatics principles and tools.

Miscellaneous

  • Any tasks assigned by the supervisor or the head of the department of the Center for One Health

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Experience working in Linux environment.
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics software and programming languages (Unix, Python, R).
  • Strong experience in NGS data analysis, variant calling, and metagenomics analysis.
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Familiarity with infectious disease genomics and AMR is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.
  • Familiarity with the Indian public health system, newer initiatives in the health sector, and relevant government policies/ strategies particularly the National Health Mission, and Ayushman Bharat.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for workshops and coordination activities.
