  • Qualification (Education): Graduate

  • Experience Required: 3-6 Year

About Job Profile

Development consulting

Based in the British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, this role is an exciting opportunity to work with business and government in an international setting, within a South Asia -wide team at the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT). DBT is the UK Government’s department for economic growth. DBT supports businesses to invest, grow and export, and the work we do has a real impact on jobs and growth across the UK. Our trade team in the British High Commission in India supports new and existing UK exporters and investors in South Asia through trade missions and events, bespoke introductions and work with local public sector entities to improve the business environment.

This role is part of DBT’s Export Support Service – International Markets (ESS-IM), a free government service which supports UK Small-Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to export across the world, with market-specific insight and guidance, provided by DBT teams based around the world. As part of DBT’s global ecosystem of export support for UK businesses, the ESS-IM South Asia Hub is the first port of call for SME’s looking to explore South Asia’s extensive trading opportunities. ESS-IM is part of the UK Government’s commitment to support UK businesses ‘sell to the world’ and grow the UK economy through exports by reaching the ‘Race to a Trillion’ challenge, laid out in the 2021 Export Strategy: Made in the UK, Sold to the World.

It is an exciting time to join the ESS-IM team in South Asia – with the service having launched only a year ago (April 2022), this role offers the opportunity to drive the next phase of development of ESS-IM in the South Asia network. The post holder will be expected to deliver an excellent service for UK businesses, lead and inspire a team and build an effective stakeholder network across DBT and with external partners.

In addition to your responsibilities in South Asia, you will be part of a high-performing, ambitious global ESS-IM team and the role will require some overseas travel. This role is ideal for existing or aspiring trade professionals looking to make a difference and develop their careers in the British High Commission.

Primary Responsibilities include

Strategy: you will shape the team’s strategy, working with senior colleagues in DBT South Asia and the ESS-IM UK team to ensure ESS-IM South Asia’s support for UK SMEs contributes to growing UK exports to India and the wider South Asia region.

Stakeholder engagement: build and manage effective working relationships with senior leaders in South Asia, colleagues across DBT (S Asia and UK colleagues including International Trade Advisers and Sector teams) and external partners and stakeholders, working in lockstep with the First Secretary for Trade.
Delivery: Overall governance and operational effectiveness of the ESS-IM S Asia Hub, driving continual improvement of the service – from upskilling the team to ensuring products and tools are fit for purpose.
Leadership: leading a team of 4 with line management responsibilities for 3 members of the team, including leading overall approach to learning and development and managing team budget of around £10,000, including travel and subsistence.
Communications & Insight: promoting ESS-IM internally and externally, identifying opportunities to boost SME export growth in South Asia, using data to drive continual improvement and support DBT S Asia’s priorities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  •     At least three years’ experience working in trade and investment
  •     Experience and/or understanding of DBT S Asia’s priorities and activities
  •     Experience and/or understanding of UK export policy and DBT’s export-facing activities
  •     Experience of working with UK SMEs to enter S Asian markets.
  •     Experience working in an international organization
