About Organisation

India is the second largest country in the world with a current population of 1.36 billion, which is expected to grow until mid-century due to population momentum. The annual population growth rate in India is approximately 1% and the population is expected to reach 1.47 billion in 2031 and 1.52 billion by 2036 (RGI-TGPP Report 2020).

The large volume of the population in the reproductive age group, particularly that of adolescents and young people, continues to be one of the important considerations for enhancing Family Planning/Reproductive Health care services.

The country’s National Population Policy (NPP) in 2000, paved the way for an integrated approach to health service delivery, and in 2012, it led to a paradigm shift towards the RMNCH+A approach in Family Planning through Global thrust with FP 2020 initiative. India is now committed and deliberately focusing on promoting the Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive (LARC) methods in the basket of Contraceptive Choices.

India has achieved a replacement level of fertility with the current Total Fertility Rate (TFR) being 2.0 (NFHS-5) and there has been an increasing trend in modern contraceptive use from 47.8% in 2015-16 (NFHS-4) to 56.5% in 2019-21 (NFHS-5), with a substantial gain during the FP 2020 period. India has also witnessed a positive shift towards an increase in spacing methods with the introduction of additional methods like Injectable (Antara), Non-hormonal Pills (Chhaya) and Postpartum Intrauterine Devices (PP-IUCD). The country has an impressive achievement of FP 2020 goals before the stipulated time frame, and this has boosted India’s FP 2030 commitment by ensuring access and availability of a wider range of contraceptives.
