Mars Reports 1.9% Further Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions in 2024, Launches $250 Million Sustainability Investment Fund

McLean, VA, July 02, 2025: Mars, Incorporated has announced a further 1.9% absolute reduction in its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2024, as outlined in its newly released 2024 Sustainable in a Generation report. The progress brings the company's total emissions reduction to 16.4% since its 2015 baseline, even as it has grown by over 69% to approximately $55 billion in annual net sales.

Much of the emissions reduction has been achieved through over 60 climate-smart agriculture projects across 29 countries, involving 13 crops. These efforts aim to make farming systems more resilient, regenerative, and sustainable.

“I’m pleased to see our continued ability to decouple our business growth from our carbon footprint while simultaneously investing in innovation and getting behind start-ups that will be creating new solutions and advance breakthroughs to help companies address resilience challenges. These are important areas to make meaningful progress in helping us to reduce exposure to future environmental risks, and eventually, turn it into profit and competitive advantage. Looking ahead, there will be setbacks – and we must be unafraid to say so – but we will stay focused on making progress, growing our business and reducing the impact we have on the planet by helping everyone thrive,” said Poul Weihrauch, CEO, Mars, Incorporated.

Mars has also launched the Mars Sustainability Investment Fund (MSIF), committing up to $250 million to invest in solutions across three areas: advanced agriculture, innovative ingredients and raw materials, and next-generation packaging that prioritizes recyclability and compostability.

Notable initiatives contributing to sustainability gains include:

  • Livelihoods Fund for Family Farmers (L3F): 932 farmers in North Sumatra certified under RSPO; 2,031 hectares shifted to sustainable practices; 8,000 hectares of forest protected.
  • KIND Almond Acres Initiative: Water use efficiency improved by 17% through subsurface irrigation.
  • Moo’ving Dairy Forward Plan: $47 million committed over three years to reduce emissions across the dairy supply chain.
  • RESTORE Project: Supporting cocoa farming and forest restoration through landscape-level conservation.
  • SARI Program in Thailand: Reached 1,445 farmers—66% women—boosting rice yields by up to 43% and reducing water usage by up to 56%.

In 2024, Mars tied long-term compensation for around 2,000 of its leaders to progress on GHG emissions reduction, integrating environmental responsibility into executive accountability.

“We’re firmly committed not just to targets in a distant future but to delivering progress now. In order to do this, societal impact goals have to be built into business decision making. And to continue to deliver progress consistently, we need systemic change across our supply chains, with governments, industry and farmers all playing a role. We know we can’t do this alone and so we want to bring our partners and peers along, as only large-scale change will deliver on our collective goals,” said Alastair Child, Chief Sustainability Officer, Mars.

The report also highlights Mars’ nutrition improvements and packaging achievements: 3.5 billion healthy meals delivered in 2024, including 309 million servings of fiber and 372 million servings of vegetables, with sodium reduced by 5% since 2019. Additionally, 64.1% of Mars’ consumer-facing packaging is now reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
