A job can provide much more than just a way to earn a living. It can offer a sense of purpose, a platform to express skills, and a way to contribute to the community. However, for persons with disabilities, achieving these goals can be significantly more challenging.
This article explores the story of Ramesh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur who, through a CBM India disability-inclusive livelihood program, discovered a fulfilling path as an artisan. Through the Swawlamban initiative, Ramesh gained access to opportunities and a support system. This transformed not only his ability to secure a sustainable income but also his sense of self-worth and leadership within his community.
Ramesh is a person with a mobility impairment after a childhood illness left his legs paralyzed. Forced to leave formal education due to attitudinal and environmental barriers, he turned to traditional wheat and paddy farming alongside his family. While this provided for their necessities, securing a more comfortable standard of living proved difficult.
Despite these hurdles, Ramesh had hopes for a better future, which were realized through the Swawlamban initiative, spearheaded by CBM India.
Initially reluctant to join the initiative, the welcoming and supportive environment of the Nav Jeevan Divyand Jan Seva Samiti, the organization of persons with disabilities established through CBM India’s project, helped him overcome his hesitation.
Ramesh discovered his passion for clay artistry among the various opportunities available through the program. He perfected his skills through hard work and commitment, shaping clay into stunning works of art. Through sheer grit and determination, Ramesh built a growing business, delivering a steady income for himself and his family. But Ramesh's journey did not stop there. Encouraged by his achievements, he took on leadership roles in his community, mentoring other artisans and championing the rights of persons with disabilities. Ramesh currently heads a group of terracotta artisans, serves as president of a local self-help group linked with the National Rural Livelihood Mission, and actively participates in initiatives that promote handicrafts by rural artisans.
Seeking to further secure his family's future, Ramesh embraced organic farming after completing a training program offered by CBM India. His growing income has allowed him to invest in his daughter's future with a quality education, gain greater independence through a motorized tricycle, and expand his business activities.
As Ramesh reflects on his journey, his joy is palpable as he says, “Apart from the money, I gained respect in the community and became the leader of the terracotta artisans’ group and the President of the Gulab Self-Help Group.”
Ramesh’s story exemplifies the idea of self-empowerment and resilience. He has emerged as the architect of his own destiny, paving the way for others to follow suit. Through his accomplishments, we glimpse a more inclusive and just future where everyone has access to the resources and support they need to reach their full potential. CBM India continues to empower dreams and change lives, one success story at a time.
