Q. How has STAIRS Foundation evolved over its two-decade operational span, and could you highlight key milestones showcasing its impact on grassroots sports development in India?

A. I am proud to say that we have established ourselves as a dominant player in grassroots sports development in India. Our journey began in 1999 with a vision to nurture young talents and advocate for sports as a viable career path, aiming to bring about positive change in marginalised communities.

Over the past two decades, we have achieved several milestones that have made a significant impact in the field of sports development. Our projects, like Khelo India and STAIRS School Football League (SSFL), have garnered recognition from the Government of India and the industry. We were honored to receive the Best NGO in Sports award by FICCI for two consecutive years, and we have received numerous national and international awards for our significant contributions. In the year 2016, we received the National Award for “Identification and Nurturing of Budding / Young Talent In India. This is know as “Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Purusakar”.

In 2023, we revamped our strategy with a new 20-year plan to create opportunities for underprivileged youth. Our dedication towards the goal is unwavering, as showcased by our recent program "EK BHARAT EK LAKSHYA." The recent launch of the 'One India One Goal' program, backed by government support, exemplifies our multi-faceted approach to grassroots sports development. Collaborative initiatives like 'Bounce of Joy' with ITC demonstrate our strategic partnerships for enhanced sports education. We are doing it in partnership with Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan governments.

We are proud to align ourselves with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and are committed to addressing critical areas such as poverty, health, education, gender equality, and sustainable communities. Our organization has evolved into a dynamic and powerful force for positive change, leaving a lasting imprint on the lives of underprivileged youth throughout India.

We have achieved this success by working closely with business chambers and international offices engaged in sports, sponsorships, youth mobilization, etc. Most of our initiatives have been adopted by the industry, which is a testament to our success and impact. From a single player in the industry to dozens of organizations today, STAIRS Foundation's journey is nothing short of inspiring. With over 25 million kids who have played with us so far, we feel the journey has just begun.

Q. Can you delve into the success factors driving initiatives like Khelo India and STAIRS School Football League, particularly emphasising the positive outcomes for underprivileged youth?

A. Programs like STAIRS Khelo India and the STAIRS School Football League have made a significant impact with their commitment to inclusivity, talent development, and holistic sports education, providing life-changing opportunities for underprivileged youth. These initiatives prioritize inclusivity and accessibility, making sports accessible to children from diverse backgrounds and promoting empowerment and equality.

Talent identification and development are essential components of these programs, providing a platform for underprivileged youth to showcase their skills and discover hidden talents, leading to transformative experiences. The holistic approach, exemplified in the STAIRS School Football League's 'Play to Play,' 'Play to Win,' and 'Play to Earn' pillars, ensures comprehensive training, mentorship, and future career opportunities, offering a pathway out of socio-economic challenges.

The recognition from the Government of India significantly contributes to the success of these programs, helping to garner resources, visibility, and scalability. Collaborations with partners, such as STAIRS' partnership with ITC for the 'Bounce of Joy' program, demonstrate the importance of alliances in amplifying positive outcomes, collectively providing transformative experiences for underprivileged youth and a pathway to a brighter future.

Q. With a commitment to Sustainable Development Goals through sports, could you provide specific examples of how STAIRS Foundation's initiatives have positively influenced education, health, and skill development in children across India?

A. STAIRS Foundation is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through sports in India. Their initiatives have had a transformative impact on education, health, and skill development among children across the country. The STAIRS School Football League and Khelo India programs are examples of how the foundation seamlessly integrates sports into the education system, promoting not only physical fitness but also crucial life skills, which contribute significantly to SDG 4 (Quality Education). STAIRS Foundation emphasizes the importance of daily physical activity, which aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and promotes overall fitness and mental well-being.

The foundation's holistic approach to skill development is evident in initiatives like the 'One India One Goal' program, which addresses a spectrum of life skills, contributing to SDGs associated with poverty reduction (SDG 1) and decent work and economic growth (SDG 8). The 'Bounce of Joy' program, a collaborative effort with ITC, furthers skill development through football education, actively promoting gender equality (SDG 5) by breaking stereotypes and fostering inclusivity.

Overall, STAIRS Foundation's initiatives collectively align with specific SDGs, making a substantial contribution to a broader sustainable development agenda. Their efforts have had a positive impact on the lives of many children in India, promoting education, health, and skill development through sports.

Q. How does STAIRS Foundation foster collaboration with governmental bodies, and to what extent has government recognition contributed to the success of its programs, as evidenced by the appreciation from the Government of India?

A. At STAIRS Foundation, we are passionate about creating positive change in society. We strongly believe that the role of government is to create a strong and equitable society, and we align with this philosophy through our initiatives. As a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization, we actively seek partnerships with governmental bodies to complement existing initiatives in sports, education, and youth development.

Our commitment to policy alignment, participation in national campaigns, and capacity building within the government system reinforces our role as a collaborative partner. We work closely with policymakers to contribute to national agendas and support the government's vision for social welfare for everyone.

Through our recent initiative, ITC's Bounce of Joy program, we directly touched the lives of 300,000 (three lakh) children in three states through government schools. We have successfully partnered with three state governments through their education department and the Secretary of Education's office. This collaborative approach helps us be more compliant with policies and add to social development in a more compassionate manner.

Recognition from the Government of India serves as a crucial catalyst for our success, enhancing our credibility and trust. This acknowledgement facilitates resource mobilisation, attracting funding, sponsorships, and partnerships, enabling the effective scaling of programs and a more substantial impact on the lives of underprivileged youth. The endorsement acts as a driving force, empowering us to navigate grassroots sports development with increased influence, support, and a broader reach.

At STAIRS Foundation, we are confident in our ability to make a positive impact, and we are committed to working hand in hand with the government to create a better future for all.

Q. In the framework of the "One India One Goal" Program, what are its key objectives, and how does it actively contribute to the complete lifecycle of a player, covering 'Play to Play,' 'Play to Win,' and 'Play to Earn'?

A. The "One India One Goal" Program by STAIRS Foundation is an innovative initiative that aims to actively shape the complete lifecycle of a player, with a focus on three fundamental pillars that take a well-rounded approach to sports development: 'Play to Play,' 'Play to Win,' and 'Play to Earn.'

The first pillar, 'Play to Play,' is designed to broaden sports' scope and accessibility to children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds through grassroots training centers. This phase is crucial as it emphasizes daily engagement, highlighting the joy and benefits of sports participation, fostering a lasting connection with physical activity. The program ensures that children have access to basic sports infrastructure and equipment, and trained coaches who help them develop their skills in a safe and nurturing environment.

Moving on to the mid-to-base level, the 'Play to Win' pillar aims to scout talent through organized championships, providing a platform for aspiring athletes to showcase their skills and pursue sports seriously. The program identifies promising talent from various regions across India and provides them with access to advanced training programs, specialized coaching, and state-of-the-art facilities. The program also focuses on imparting essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience, which are crucial for success both on and off the field.

Lastly, at the base of the funnel, the 'Play to Earn' pillar encompasses training, growth, and livelihood, with STAIRS actively involved in comprehensive programs, mentorship initiatives, and career development opportunities. This approach is aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to poverty reduction and economic growth, emphasising sports' transformative potential in empowering underprivileged youth across India. The program provides athletes with access to higher education, vocational training, and career opportunities, helping them build a better future for themselves and their families.

In conclusion, the "One India One Goal" Program is a comprehensive and well-rounded initiative that aims to provide children from diverse backgrounds with access to sports infrastructure, training, and career opportunities. The program's three pillars are designed to take a holistic approach to sports development, ensuring that children have access to the resources they need to succeed both on and off the field.

Q. Can you shed light on STAIRS Foundation's strategy in broad-basing sports through the "Play to Play" pillar of the "One India One Goal" Program, making sports accessible to a wider participant base?

A. The STAIRS Foundation believes that every child deserves the opportunity to participate in sports, without being held back by financial constraints. To address this issue, the "Play to Play" pillar of the "One India One Goal" Program was established, with the aim of providing free sports training to children across diverse regions in India.

The foundation's grassroots training centers are strategically located to ensure maximum accessibility, regardless of a child's socio-economic background. The sports modules are designed to be engaging and age-appropriate, ensuring that children enjoy the experience while learning valuable skills.

STAIRS collaborates with local communities and schools to raise awareness about the benefits of sports, breaking down cultural and social barriers that may prevent children from participating. They also encourage parental support, creating a culture where sports are seen as integral to a child's development.

Through their comprehensive strategy, the "Play to Play" pillar is able to broaden the participant base, while also fostering a positive sports culture that reaches and benefits underprivileged children across India.

Q. How does STAIRS Foundation identify and nurture talent through championships within the "Play to Win" pillar, and what notable impact does this have on the development of young athletes?

A. In the realm of sports, serious athletes are always on the lookout for opportunities to showcase their skills and receive the recognition they deserve. For aspiring young players, this can be particularly challenging, as they often lack access to accredited championships and the resources required to compete at a professional level.

Thankfully, the STAIRS Foundation has stepped up to address this issue with their "Play to Win" pillar of the "One India One Goal" Program. By adopting a systematic and comprehensive approach to talent identification and nurturing, the foundation has created a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and receive the recognition they deserve.

Through inter-school and community-level championships, the STAIRS Foundation provides a crucial platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and receive expert coaching and mentorship. These events serve as a crucial platform for talent scouts and coaches to assess participants' skills and potential, looking beyond just winning to identify attributes such as sportsmanship and dedication.

For those identified as having exceptional potential, the STAIRS Foundation provides advanced training, mentorship, and exposure to higher levels of competition. This structured approach not only enhances participants' skills but also fosters a competitive spirit, a drive for continuous improvement, and ambitions to excel in sports at various levels of competition.

Overall, the STAIRS Foundation's holistic approach positively influences the development of a skilled and ambitious generation of young athletes, providing them with the opportunity to realize their full potential and achieve their dreams.

Q. What plans does STAIRS Foundation have for establishing youth clubs and training academies as part of the "One India One Goal" Program, and how will these contribute to outdoor activities and life skills training?

A. STAIRS Foundation envisions establishing youth clubs and training academies across the country as transformative components of its "One India, One Goal" Program. The foundation aims to create inclusive spaces in every village where children from diverse backgrounds can engage in various sports and recreational activities. These clubs will be run by independent individuals who align with rights channels and will teach as per the prevailing international norms.

The foundation's Physical Education and Sports Science department is developing programs to create such structures that will emphasize a holistic approach to development. These clubs will cultivate teamwork, leadership skills, and a sense of community, providing participants with opportunities to excel in sports while also honing essential life skills such as communication and problem-solving.

The training academies under this initiative will offer specialized coaching and mentorship to individuals displaying exceptional passion and potential in specific sports. These academies serve as talent incubators, providing advanced training modules and exposure to high-level competitions.

The establishment of youth clubs and training academies within the "One India One Goal" Program signifies STAIRS Foundation's dedication to fostering well-rounded individuals, preparing them not just for success in their chosen sports but also for the broader challenges and opportunities life presents. The foundation's "Play to Earn" initiative will soon announce the details of these programs, which will be a significant step towards creating a healthier and more prosperous India.

Q. In the pilot phase of the "Bounce of Joy" initiative, how does STAIRS Foundation ensure inclusivity and accessibility for underprivileged children, aligning with its commitment to positive change in marginalized sections of society?

A. The ITC company initiated the "Bounce of Joy" program to pilot and understand the use of sports in social development, especially in children's space. They were looking for a partner who would understand their vision and be open to working with them. Fortunately, the STAIRS Foundation and ITC CSR division aligned as both organizations share the same values. STAIRS Foundation's outreach and understanding of grassroots sports combined with ITC's strong and methodical approach to CSR is helping them achieve their targets.

In the pilot phase of the "Bounce of Joy" initiative, STAIRS Foundation is dedicated to inclusivity and accessibility for underprivileged children. This aligns with their broader mission of instigating positive change in marginalized sections of society. They strategically select pilot locations in areas with a higher concentration of underprivileged children, ensuring that the program is directed towards communities with limited access to sports and educational resources. By eliminating financial barriers, STAIRS Foundation ensures that the initiative's benefits are accessible to all children, providing essential football gear to partner schools and facilitating free training sessions. This makes sports education inclusive and available to underprivileged children.

Moreover, the STAIRS Foundation actively collaborates with schools, local communities, and government bodies to generate awareness about the initiative. This community-centric approach addresses the unique needs of marginalized sections, fosters a sense of belonging, and encourages parental involvement, leading to active engagement within the communities.

With the launch of its flagship program, "One India One Goal," the foundation has embarked on a 20-year plan that is divided into five equal parts of four years each. In the first year of this plan, the foundation has already established its presence in 468 districts across the country, emphasizing its focus on outreach and ensuring that every Indian has the opportunity to participate in sports.

The "One India One Goal" program is based on the principle of "Play to Win," a championship-based talent scouting and training program that emphasizes the foundation's belief in serious sports. Additionally, there are other significant moves that the foundation plans to announce and implement, and it seeks the participation of all stakeholders in making these initiatives more participative and successful.

Looking ahead to the next decade, STAIRS Foundation aims to expand its reach and impact on underprivileged youth.
