Q. The GHCL Foundation Trust was established in 2007. How have the social activities of the Foundation evolved over the years in terms of focus areas, scale and impact? Could you highlight some of the significant milestones and achievements during this journey?

A. The GHCL Foundation embarked on its transformative journey in 2007 with a vision to make a positive impact on society through CSR initiatives. Recognizing the diverse needs of communities, the Foundation established a dual-pronged approach, catering to both need-based and demand-based CSR activities. While demand-based CSR responds to specific requests from local communities, we chose to focus more on need-based CSR, driven by a commitment to sustainable and long-lasting change. This approach aimed to address fundamental issues faced by communities and foster holistic development.

In the initial years, the Foundation operated in Sutrapada in Gujarat, mainly around the plant. Over the years, GHCL Foundation has evolved its CSR focus, implementing projects worth Rs 20.83 Cr., honing in on key areas such as women empowerment, agriculture, education, and health. These strategic shifts have allowed us to create a meaningful and enduring impact on the lives of the underprivileged. Today, the Foundation is partnering with close to 7 NGOs, and has earmarked close to 18 Cr. for FY 24 which will impact the lives of more than 1 lakh beneficiaries in Sutrapada and Bada village in Kutch in Gujarat as well as Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

GHCL Foundation recognized the critical role of agriculture in the livelihoods of countless individuals. Given the vast number of people engaged in the agriculture sector, the Foundation prioritized agricultural initiatives. One of its earliest endeavors was conducting comprehensive soil testing to determine soil fertility, empowering farmers with valuable insights to optimize crop growth. Additionally, we initiated the provision of organic fertilizers, a sustainable alternative to chemical inputs, enhancing soil health and environmental sustainability.

One of the noteworthy milestones achieved by the Foundation was its sanitation program in association with the TATA Trust and under the aegis of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan which improved hygiene, enhanced the dignity of marginalized communities and impacted around 10 thousand households. Moreover, we played a pivotal role in solving the soil fertility issue of farmers, reducing their input costs through natural farming methods and thereby ensuring food security. Over 1 lakh farmers benefited from our initiatives in the farming sector.

In the realm of education, GHCL Foundation has been instrumental in providing skill development training and placement facilities, enabling youth to secure better livelihood and contribute to the economic growth of their regions. We have trained and placed over one thousand youths in multiple fields who will contribute towards the growth of the nation. Through these initiatives and strategic shifts, our Foundation has demonstrated a commitment to fostering sustainable development and improving the lives of individuals and communities, illustrating the profound impact that a dedicated CSR approach can have on society.

Q. How does GHCL Foundation assess the needs of the community and determine the focus areas and objectives of its CSR programs? Which areas is the Foundation presently focusing on?

A. Our Foundation has demonstrated a robust commitment to community engagement and needs assessment, positioning itself as a catalyst for positive change through its CSR activities. With a finger on the pulse of the communities it serves, the Foundation teams maintain regular contact with local communities and gram panchayats through field visits. This proactive approach allows them to intimately understand the pressing issues faced by these communities and assess their evolving needs. Active engagement with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) facilitates grassroots insights, empowering them with skills and resources.

Furthermore, the Foundation conducts thorough need assessments, ensuring alignment with community priorities. This strategic approach solidifies the Foundation's focus areas, fostering targeted impact.

Adaptability has been a hallmark of our Foundation's approach. During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we embarked on a mission to enhance healthcare accessibility and conducted health camps that screened over 20 thousand women for cancer detection, highlighting their responsiveness to urgent health concerns.

In the past, GHCL Foundation concentrated on addressing the challenges faced by farmers, offering innovative solutions to enhance agricultural productivity. Recognizing that community needs change over time, the Foundation has realigned its focus areas accordingly. Presently, the priority areas are women empowerment and education.

One noteworthy initiative in this regard is the vocational training institutes, where the number of female trainees surpasses male enrolments. This demonstrates our commitment to bridging gender disparities and empowering women through skill development, thereby fostering economic independence and self-reliance.

Q. In terms of agriculture and animal husbandry, what are the key initiatives undertaken by GHCL Foundation, and how have they contributed to the community's development in these areas?

A. The GHCL Foundation has been a staunch supporter of agriculture and sustainable farming practices, aiming to reduce the input costs for farmers while promoting eco-friendly methods. To achieve this, the Foundation initiated a comprehensive soil testing program to assess soil health and suitability for organic farming in the region. This critical data informed farmers about the potential for organic cultivation and the use of bio-fertilizers, fostering sustainability in agriculture.

We went a step further by actively promoting various innovative farming techniques such as natural farming, zero-budget agriculture, and organic farming among local farmers. These initiatives provided farmers with valuable knowledge and tools to reduce input costs and increase profitability.

Recognizing the importance of animal husbandry, the Foundation facilitated meetings with Krishi Vigyan Kendra to educate farmers about optimal nutrition and food requirements for their livestock. This support improved the well-being of the animals and ensured sustainable practices within the agricultural ecosystem.

GHCL Foundation's agriculture initiatives are transforming farming. Micro irrigation boosts ROI by 38%, reducing water usage. Organic fertilizer support eliminates 60% of chemical inputs, promoting sustainability. Integrated Farm Management saves farmers 59%, enhancing their profitability and sustainability.

Q. Can you provide insights into the impact of GHCL Foundation's health programs on the lives of individuals in the targeted communities? What specific health services and interventions have been provided?

This proactive approach to early cancer detection has been instrumental in saving lives and raising awareness about women's health issues.

In addition to cancer detection, GHCL Foundation organizes monthly eye camps in the Sutrapada area, ensuring that individuals in remote regions receive essential eye care services. This program remains active, ensuring that these children have access to quality education despite their challenging circumstances.

Another noteworthy initiative, Vidyajot, has been running successfully for over a decade. It focuses on counseling parents about the importance of education and the value of sending their children to school. This program has played a pivotal role in reducing dropout rates, particularly among higher secondary students.

A. We diligently nurture strong relationships with top NGOs, fostering goodwill that paves the way for impactful collaborations. These partnerships are not arbitrary; they are meticulously chosen based on the program's specific requirements and the suitability of the NGO.

While NGOs are crucial in the implementation phase, GHCL Foundation takes on the responsibility of comprehensive program planning, funding, and monitoring. This ensures that every aspect of the initiative aligns with our vision and commitment to making a difference in society. NGOs, thus, become invaluable allies, bringing their expertise and grassroots-level reach to translate ideas into tangible change. A. The GHCL Foundation's commitment to excellence is underscored by its meticulous approach to program evaluation. These criteria serve as essential benchmarks, enabling the systematic monitoring of each program's progress and effectiveness.

These parameters include financial accountability, community engagement, sustainability, and the program's ability to create tangible, long-lasting impact. Regular and transparent assessments based on these benchmarks help the Foundation to adapt, refine, and optimize strategies, guaranteeing that resources are allocated where they can make the most significant difference.

The GHCL Foundation also conducts an annual third-party impact assessment in collaboration with esteemed project partner agencies, including HelpAge, Swadeep, CSPC, TATA Trust, and Gujarat Green Revolution Company. This comprehensive evaluation ensures transparency, accountability, and the effectiveness of our initiatives, driving positive change in communities.

Q. How does GHCL ensure the long-term sustainability of its CSR projects and programs, especially in terms of community ownership and self-sufficiency?

A. The GHCL Foundation is dedicated to ensuring the sustainability of its diverse projects, empowering communities and promoting environmental stewardship.
